Update from the recent two-day workshop we gave to The Society for the Protection of Ancient Building (SPAB) scholars. During the workshop, we looked into the world of stone craftsmanship, culminating in the collaborative creation by the scholars of a quatrefoil blind panel.
Our focus was on practical techniques, exploring various tools utilized in stonework, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the properties and limitations of the stone itself. Participants engaged in hands-on sessions demonstrating the skills of working with, and conserving existing stone, as well as strategies for effective conservation in the face of weathering and frost damage.
We also delved into topics such as recognizing key indicators in mortar aggregates and the significance of correctly bedding sedimentary stones.
In addition to the practical sessions, our breaks were filled with enriching discussions on a wide range of subjects, including a tour of Woodchester Mansion, classical proportion theories, the cultural significance of stonemasonry, and the fascinating intersections of psychology and harmonics in architectural design. We also explored the chemical composition and geology of stone, the neurological aspects of architectural appreciation, and the techniques behind creating mood and movement within architectural spaces. A view of the multidisciplinary knowledge required in the realm of stonework and architectural conservation was given. On a personal note, we enjoyed the company of the scholars who were engaged and receptive to the projects and subjects covered.
